A proverb is a simple and insightful, traditional saying that expresses a perceived truth based on common sense or experience. It can be metaphorical, or musical sounding with elements of poetry. A proverbial phrase or a proverbial expression is a type of conventional saying like proverbs and transmitted by oral tradition. Proverbs are an integral part of African culture. They are passed on from generation to generation for centuries, they are still in wide use today and are very much part of everyday speech. These sayings are used to illustrate ideas, reinforce arguments and deliver messages of inspiration, consolation, celebration and advice.
Kenyans are Swahili-speaking Peoples from the Eastern part of Africa. They call their proverbs “Methali” which translates to “expressing a basic truth”. Well known methalis are sometimes so popular that they are displayed on kangas, colourful cultural clothing worn by Kenyans to communicate subtle messages or used to teach moral values and lessons.
This book emphasized the oral traditions of Swahili-speaking peoples by sharing different translated proverbs. It came about as a way to celebrate the breadth of wisdom that Swahili-speaking elders have shared with their loved ones. Many conversations were relayed by loved ones sharing bits of advice with opening remarks such as “You know what my people say…..” or “My mother used to always say….”. We are sharing some of the culture, opening the door a bit wider so that we can all feel as though we are sitting at the feet of our elders, sharing their words of love and wisdom one more time.
